Union Pacific seeks a trial attorney to join its Law Department in Omaha to prosecute and defend a wide variety of commercial litigation, including contract claims, property damage claims, collection matters, real estate matters, and other business disputes. The successful candidate will represent the Company's interests before trial courts, appellate courts, arbitration panels, and before administrative agencies and work closely with stakeholders to develop and drive legal strategies. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a writing example along with their application.

Union Pacific has one open position for a General Attorney or Assistant General Attorney. The successful candidate will be offered a position of General Attorney or Assistant General Attorney depending on the successful candidate's level of experience. The Assistant General Attorney or General Attorney will advise the Assistant Vice President - Commerical Law, the Vice President of Law - Commercial & Regulatory , and the Chief Legal Officer on the successful resolution of commercial legal matters.

Serve as legal counsel to Union Pacific Railroad Company.


Accountabilities

  • Conduct research and analyze legal issues
  • Work independently and with a team with excellent judgment and both strategic and tactical thinking in a variety of litigated business disputes. The attorney will work with a variety of internal departments at Union Pacific (e.g., Operating, Finance, M&S), as well as Law Department colleagues across the system and other stakeholders to: defend Union Pacific in federal and state court; enforce Union Pacific's rights and maximize its business opportunities; identify and mitigate franchise risk; improve delivery and outcome of legal services; and ensure all litigated matters meet company goals. On a case-by-case basis, the attorney will serve as trial attorney and in other matters manage outside counsel.
  • Draft and review agreements including settlement agreements.
  • Lead, handle, and balance a high volume of matters and assignments while working as a key member of the commercial litigation team to support all matters that report to the Assistant Vice President - Commercial Litigation.
  • Expertise in legal and analytical work with a business-oriented pragmatic approach to problem-solving and application of litigation protocols. This accountability includes keeping the Supervising Attorney advised on case status/strategy; developing and meeting case budgets; efficiently using Law Department systems for case management; and participating in case reviews.
  • Able to lead situations, prioritize and handle the workload and simultaneous tasks, and meet deadlines in a changing, fast-paced environment including development of standard approaches for specific litigated case types. The attorney will work with internal and external stakeholders to resolve disputes pre-litigation; and engage and collaborate with Law Department colleagues and other stakeholders on various non-litigated legal matters.

Qualifications

Required

  • A Juris Doctor degree
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Admitted to practice law in Nebraska or eligible to be admitted in Nebraska.
  • 2 to 5 years of experience working as a litigator in both state and federal courts
  • Some experience or background in commercial litigation
